What you need to know about fence care
Getting ahead of issues is the key to maintaining your fence whether it is wood, vinyl, or aluminum. That means keeping your fence clean, combatting algae and mold growth, and addressing minor cracks, rust, and repairs right away.
To-Do List for every fence owner
- Clear away debris – Remove yard debris, dead leaves, and tall grass from the base of your fence to prevent moisture buildup and stains which can rot wood fences and may stain vinyl and aluminum fences. Debris that is left may also hold snow against your fence, which causes added weight that can compromise fence posts and damage the fencing.
- Keep your fence clean – Use a power washer to get dirt and algae off vinyl and aluminum fences. For wood fences, it is better to use a brush and appropriate cleaner to remove dirt to avoid the damage pressure washing can do to wood.
- Remove rust immediately – Rust that has developed on fasteners, hinges, or latches will continue to spread if not addressed. Remove the rust right away and apply a rust inhibitor, or replace fasteners and parts that cannot be cleaned up.
- Use algae and moss prevention – Vinyl fences are especially vulnerable to algae and moss growth, which can permanently stain your fence. Your local fence expert can recommend an appropriate spray treatment to prevent algae, moss and lichen.
- Repair small cracks and gaps – An epoxy wood filler specified for outdoor use will fill these small gaps so they do not worsen. While these spots will show unless you paint your fence, the filler will get you through winter weather after which you can determine whether it is best to replace the board.
- Paint, stain or seal – Plan to protect your wood fence every two years by using a waterproofing treatment of paint, stain, or sealant.
Repairs are a critical part of fence care, since loose parts, wobbly posts, and broken latches will be vulnerable to damage in wind and heavy snow. Replace rotting or loose posts and boards right away and check that all latches, hinges, and fasteners are intact and in good working order.
Also check the surrounding area:
- A dead or damaged tree branch hanging over your fence could cause serious damage during a winter storm should it come down and should be removed.
- Eroding ground beneath and near your fence could wash away during rain and snow melt, causing posts to become loose. Be sure to shore these areas up before the winter season.
