You have made the investment in a new fence for your home or business, and you know care is part of the commitment. Whether your fence is new or a few years into its life, your goal is to keep it sound and looking its best to protect that investment. Wood, vinyl, and aluminum fences all benefit from regular maintenance. Take steps now while weather is still warm and dry to prep your fence for damp, cold winter weather.

Fence prep tips

  • Early fall is the perfect time to wipe down your fence and clear away yard debris, sticks and leaves that have collected against the fence. Remove pollen and dirt and inspect corners and crevices for mold, mildew, and algae.
  • Vinyl and aluminum fences can be power washed for a good cleaning. Avoid using a power washer on a wood fence as it can damage the surface.
  • For excess moss or algae growth, and to prevent growth during the winter, consider a spray treatment. Ask your local fence expert for recommendations.
  • Check for wobbly posts and weak boards that may need tightening or repair to prevent heavy snow or high wind from knocking them down.
  • Treat or paint scratches or other surface damage that could corrode during the damp winter months.
  • For wood fences, treatment with a waterproof stain is the best way to ensure the wood is protected. You may also check with your local fence expert about a sealant that would be appropriate for your fence.
  • If your wood fence has a painted surface, an additional coat of paint is a great way to keep it sealed and protected for the winter.
  • Rust on metal fences or on hinges and latches of any style fence should be removed and the metal treated and sealed to prevent further corrosion. If gates, latches or hinges are severely rusted, they should be replaced.

When a fence needs to be replaced

A damaged fence or sections that are showing some weakening can sometimes be repaired, or just a section replaced. How do you know when it’s time for a new fence? Consider the following:

  • Several support posts are wobbling, loose, or can be pulled free.
  • Multiple boards on a wood fence are curling or pulling away; large sections of a vinyl fence are showing cracks.
  • Fence gates are sagging or will not close properly.

Any fence that is showing signs of extensive rot should be replaced rather than attempting repairs.

Your fence – wood, vinyl, or aluminum – can be especially vulnerable to the wind and snow that comes with a Northeast Ohio winter.
