There are several advantages to installing a fence during the winter, not the least of which is getting on a fence contractor’s schedule a lot faster. There also are some steps you will want to take to ensure a successful installation. That extra time with your local fence expert will help you get the job done right and be ready for spring activities.
Consider your fence material
Modern fencing provides you with many options for an attractive and secure fence that enhances your home or business. Depending on your application and time to devote to care, you can review these options with your local fence expert.
- Wood fences are timeless and strong, but you will need to be diligent about care, as they require maintenance in freezing climates, including wood treatment and sealers.
- Vinyl fencing needs minimal maintenance and is available in many colors and textures that mimic natural wood, but care should be taken in extreme cold that can make the material brittle.
- Chain link fencing can be a great choice for security and for its flexibility in freezing temperatures and heavy snow.
Ground prep is key
At Thomas Fence, our team works with you to be sure your yard is ready for cold weather installation. We’ll ensure:
- The installation area is clear of snow.
- The ground isn’t too wet or soft, which can lead to damage to your yard and/or poor installation.
- The ground is thawed enough to allow for sufficient digging of post holes.
- Gravel or sand is used as a base to protect fence posts from heaving during freezing cycles.
How cold is too cold?
Winter temperatures in Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania generally allow for successful fence installation throughout the season, provided the ground isn’t too frozen to dig and concrete is given ample time to cure. At Thomas Fence, we will not attempt to install your fence if temperatures are colder than 25 degrees.
With spring and summer being the busiest seasons for fence installation, winter is the ideal time to schedule your fence project with Thomas Fence. Your existing landscaping and grass will experience less disruption and your fence and additional planting will be ready for spring and summer.
